Spring Onion in Winter

August 9, 2012

Many names, many uses. What do you call spring onions?
On a taste.com.au forum, the name issue raises a few eyebrows and a few heated arguments. But the truth of the matter is, it depends on where you live in the world. Like Aubergine and eggplant. Capsicum and peppers. Other names that are given to these long green stalks with white bearded tassles are: shallots, green onions, Welsh onions, scallions (American) and bunching onions (Japanese). Regardless of their name, the time to plant is now. So, get a wriggle on or you won’t have anything to debate come harvest.
